River Cleaning (Rejuvenation of a River)

(7th April’19 to 30th May’2019)

As a people’s movement, in association with Naam Foundation we embarked upon the River Cleaning, Rejuvenation and Beautification project involving cleaning the Kadwai river of plastic & other domestic waste, clear the construction debris, remove invasive plants & vegetation, desilting the river bed to give it the original depth, reinforcing river bank as required, beautification of the river banks with garden / flower beds, tree plantation, setting up check dams & setting up a garbage management system.

The people of Kadwai were privileged to have “Jal Nayak”, Dr. Ajit Gokhale, who was our consultant and guide in executing the most challenging project.

  • The Kadwai River – Is a source of natural clean water and used for flood mitigation, waste assimilation and irrigation.
  • Every aspect of the Kadwai River has been part of a natural eco-system. However, over decades there was degradation of the river due to neglect, general apathy and also because of sand from the dam & the Sahyadris. Earlier a part of natural landscape was a matter of pride, but the deterioration has marred its beauty, caused damage to the fresh water eco-system and also affected the habitat of fish & rare birds.
  • Other damages include, the buildup of silt had resulted in reduction of water depth, increased risk of flooding, release of nasty smelling odors from the process of biological decomposition and potential loss of the watercourse.
  • Awareness amongst the people and the intense desire to clean up the river inspired us to undertake the major task of desilting the river over a stretch of 2.5 kilometers which involved the removal of earthy materials, such as sand and mud from the bed of a fast flowing river.

The Chronology of the River Cleaning Project has been detailed in the book “Munqalib – The story of Transformation of a Stream into a River”.
